Reata Park Sports Complex

Scottsdale Offers More Public Recreation Destinations!

PARKS AND RECREATION | ATHLETIC FACILITIES

To bring the WestWorld Sports Complex to life, the City of Scottsdale acquired land from the Arizona State Land Department and coordinated with the Bureau of Reclamation. Situated at the intersection of Thompson Peak Parkway and McDowell Mountain Ranch Road, the site was previously undeveloped. This newly constructed complex expands outdoor recreational amenities for Scottsdale residents, featuring:
  • Five sports fields for recreational and competitive play
  • LED lighting with shielded design to minimize glare
  • Pedestrian pathways
  • Shaded seating and spectator areas
  • Restrooms
  • Parking
  • Drainage facilities
  • Maintenance building

The WestWorld Sports Complex transformed unused public land into a vibrant recreational facility, designed for year-round use. Balancing responsible land use with popular amenities, the facility integrates harmoniously with the McDowell Mountains and natural wash areas, enhancing its high-visibility location. The design emphasizes functionality and pedestrian flow, with pathways for walking and jogging that connect various areas of the complex. Public art, titled Polygon Plaza by artist Troy Neiman, adds aesthetic value, featuring geometric shapes inspired by soccer balls. This installation not only serves as a visual focal point but also functions as seating and play areas for children, blending art with utility.

Innovative Features: The project used several innovations to enhance efficiency. Value engineering regraded the site, eliminating 40,000 tons of soil export, saving the City $400,000 and minimizing scheduling and hauling impacts. Sand-based turf fields incorporate golf course technology with a sand rootzone and gravel blanket for optimal drainage and turf recovery. Shared 3D digital grade models facilitated precise excavation and collaboration.
